How it works
ChangeNOW is an instant-swap router rather than an exchange with an order book. You choose a pair, the site quotes a rate assembled from third-party market makers, and it returns a one-time deposit address. Send the input and the output lands in the wallet you typed at the quote screen. There is no balance to fund, no withdrawal to request and nothing to log into. The homepage advertises more than 1,200 assets and roughly two minutes of average settlement, on a record going back to 2017.
Custody is the part the front page elides. Your coins sit at a ChangeNOW-controlled deposit address for the length of the swap. The window is short, but it is real custody, and it is the whole reason a hold is possible at all — the structural weakness shared with SimpleSwap, StealthEX and Exolix, and the one Bisq and Haveno engineer away with multisig escrow.
Fixed rate against floating rate
Two flows exist. A floating quote tracks the market until the deposit confirms; a fixed quote locks a number for a limited deposit window. ChangeNOW is candid that the guarantee is priced — it lays down "a small reserve to guarantee your safety from exchange rate fluctuations", folded into the displayed rate rather than billed as a separate fee. It does not publish how long that window runs, which matters on a congested chain when the deposit arrives late.
KYC & privacy
At the quote screen the service asks for nothing: no email, no phone, no document, no account. An optional profile exists and unlocks history and the NOW Token programme, but a swap never requires one. That is a genuine L2 posture on our rubric, and it seats ChangeNOW with the other discreet-tier services on this desk.
The qualification lives in the policy behind the screen. An automated risk-prevention system scores every trade, and identity checks, when they fire, are run by the third-party processor Sumsub. The company states plainly that the criteria "can't be made public, otherwise there will be people who will try to abuse those criteria". A flagged swap is held, an ID scan and evidence on the origin of funds are requested, and a refusal returns the deposit to its sending address minus network fees within 24 hours — after which ChangeNOW reserves the right to blacklist those addresses.
What the chain still says about you
Monero pairs are quoted, and Monero gives the screening layer nothing to read on the input side. The exit is another matter: an XMR payout into BTC lands on a transparent chain and inherits whatever heuristics the partner applies downstream. The independent listing at kycnot.me records a user held purely because the address they paid from had previously touched eXch — guilt by adjacency, decided by a rule the user could not have read in advance.
Strengths and limits
The catalogue is the strongest argument. Very few routers quote as many exotic pairs, and none of the competing desks graded here match the depth. Settlement is quick, the flow needs no prior deposit, the public API is documented, and the operator has run nine years without a hack and without an exit — a record Majestic Bank and FixedFloat did not manage.
Against that: CHN Group LLC is incorporated in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, with a Tallinn postbox handling compliance mail — a pairing that supplies a European address without European supervision. There is no third-party security audit, no transparency report, and no published threshold above which a trade gets screened. Trocador spreads one swap across partner venues and lets the user filter them by KYC posture; ChangeNOW concentrates that discretion in a single operator. It discloses more than Changelly or Godex, and it is not in the same conversation as the trustless tier.
Verdict
For a one-off conversion of a modest amount in a pair nobody else quotes, ChangeNOW is the efficient choice, and the overwhelming majority of swaps clear untouched. It is the wrong instrument for exiting a Monero position, for size, or for anyone who treats a discretionary hold as disqualifying. Grade: C (6.3/10). Trust: CAUTION.
ChangeNOW is the deepest catalogue in the no-signup swap category and the fastest way to move an asset nobody else quotes. The cost is a short custody window governed by rules the operator will not publish, and a nine-year record that is clean on security but not on discretion. Grade: C (6.3/10). Trust: CAUTION.
